As a small business, you are constantly trying to figure out how to get involved in social media networks, or if you even should become involved. Social media is still new among businesses and they are continuing to spend time becomeing acclimated. Social media can be a gift and a curse depending on your approach to your customers, as well as if it fits into your industry and target market.

Here are some DOs and DONTs when trying to build your brand on social media networks.

DO

Share relevant content and articles consistently across different social network platforms. By sharing content relevant to your industry, you become known as an expert in your industry. Consumers love to buy from trusted experts in the industry.

DON'T

Advertise constantly. When I see my network flooded with different ads and self promotion, I become frustrated. And so do many other people. Put yourself in a customer's shoes and realize that they don't want to see a barrage of ads in their social network feed.

DO

Become personal. Speak to people on social networks. Speak to potential prospects and current customers. Respond favorably to everyone, even your detractors as well as complaints.

DON'T

Become automated. Don't send the same auto-responder message to everyone who follows you on Twitter or who likes you on Facebook. It is annoying and most people can spot automated responses and messages now that it has become so commonplace among social networks.

DO

Stay active. By continuing to share relevant content and by personally engaging with your audience, they will continue to follow your company and see what you are up to. The more people stay in touch with you, the better chance you have of making sales and developing your online brand.

DON'T

Become a ghost town. If your social media stays stagnant for too long, your followers will no longer be interested in your company. Once people stop following you, it is very difficult to earn them back.
