Alt tags (also referred to as Alt text or alternate text) will appear when a user's cursor hovers over an image (depending on what browser you are using). It also serves as alternate information for a particular image.

Alt tags are used in HTML image tags and can be filled in with descriptive text. The text within an alt tag should be kept short (somewhere between 50-100 characters). You also want to avoid stuffing them with keywords while trying to receive a better seo ranking.

Why It's Important

Alt text is important because it helps search engines get information about a particular image. Since search engines like Google cannot read images, it will read the alt tag of an image in order to determine what that image is. While it is not the most important element of search engine optimization, it certainly does not hurt to add the correct alt text to each image on your website. This will help increase the seo relevancy of your page.

Alt tags can also act as a substitute for images and graphics that cannot be rendered properly by a browser or it will substitute for an image which no longer exists or exists in a broken path.
