The click through rate (which can also be abbreviated as CTR) is the percentage of website users who clicked on your ad versus the percentage of users who viewed your ad. For example, if your company ad received 100 impressions in a day and was clicked on 5 times within that same day, then your ad received a 5% click through rate.

Click through rates are analyzed when developing and managing pay per click campaigns and SEO campaigns. Google adwords and other pay per click tools record click through rates to help companies determine how well their campaigns and ads are performing. A ppc manager needs to keep a close eye on this percentage.

Even though click through rates do reveal many important metrics of relevance, sometimes clicks may simply be "curiousity" clicks and they do not always turn into buyers. So a high CTR does not always mean higher sales and profits for your company. Focusing on a high CTR rate is the first step before focusing on your website's conversion rate.

There are several ways to increase click through rates while managing your pay per click campaign. You should focus on targeted keywords which are relevant to your company website and pay per click ads. Users will then be more inclined to click on your ad when it relates to what they are looking for. Also, make sure that your ad text is convincing and engaging. Boring ad text that does not catch a user's attention will not result in any clicks.

Why It's Important

Click through rate is very important to a pay per click campaign. It is a great way to determine relevancy for your ad. Pay per click tools, especially google, place great importance on high click through rates. If your CTR is determined to be high, then your ad is deemed as highly relevant because this means that your keywords are relevant to the people searching for them and your ad is relevant to your keywords and website. Thus, Google will tend to reward your campaign with lower costs per click if you are receiving a high click through rate.
