Flash (short for Adobe Flash) is a platform for embedding interactive multimedia elements onto a website. Flash is frequently used for photo gallery banners, games, banner advertisements and other types of animations.

Using flash on websites gives mixed reviews. On the positive side, it can enrich a website visually adding a visually stunning and interactive effect. On the negative side, it has been known to slow down the overall loading time of a website because flash applications tend to be relatively large and bulky. It is also known to affect search engine optimization in a negative way due to the fact that search engines cannot read content or links which have been embedded within a flash object.

The iPhone caused a stir when it was revealed that it would not be supporting flash at all when displaying mobile websites.

Why It's Important

It is important to know the pros and cons of having flash on your website. Using flash in moderation can help the visual effect of your website, without affecting SEO. It is also important to know how flash is supported throughout browsers and to make sure that your flash objects are not so large that they affect the usability and loading time of a website.
