The index page of a website is also known as the homepage. The index file on a website is the default page for the directory on a web server. For example, if you log onto www.potenture.com, you will have accessed the index page, or the home page.

The most common index files can be index.html, index.htm and default.html (which is used on some windows servers).

Why It's Important

Every website should have an index page within the root directory of the web server. The index page will serve as your website's homepage. This allows your visitors to see the home page when they come to the website without having to type in the URL containing index.html. It also prevents your visitors from seeing files you might not want them to see.
