A negative keyword is a keyword that you would not want your ad to display for. Google adwords and other pay per click management tools allow you to use this keyword matching option technique. If you are paying per click, negative keywords will make sure that your ad does not display for irrelevant keywords.

A perfect example of when to use a negative keyword with your pay per click management campaign would be this. If a company is providing professional and custom website design services, you would want to filter out any queries that contain the word "free". The word free would be an example of your negative keyword.

Why It's Important

By using negative keywords, your company can save a bundle with pay per click campaigns. By targeting the proper keywords and filtering out negative words that may result in useless clicks, you can maximize your adwords ppc campaign budget and increase the effectiveness of your overall campaign. The last thing you want to be doing is wasting advertising dollars on useless and irrelevant clicks on your ppc campaign.
