A sitemap is a well-organized list of all the pages (URLs) on a website. Sitemaps are usually built as separate web pages to allow for easier organization of all of the pages on the website. A sitemap is a crucial component of SEO.

You can see Potenture's sitemap here for an example. Notice how there are links to several important pages on the website and they are listed under descriptive headings. These descriptions will help the search engines and human visitors locate pages on your company website.

Why It's Important

Sitemaps are important for search engine optimization because they will help Google and other search engines crawl your website, index your website and find certain pages that may not be fully indexed. Sitemaps will also help you SEO efforts by boosting your rankings because sometimes search engines are not able to follow all of the links and pages on your website. A sitemap will prevent pages on your website from becoming lost.

Sitemaps also help human users from locating certain pages on the website that they may not be able to find. More advanced website users will know to check the sitemap page if they are not able to find a particular page on your company website.
