Because many website visitors are repeating visitors, it is necessary to differentiate unique visitors from repeating visitors. You can do this by creating a separate group called unique visitors when you are measuring and analyzing the traffic coming in to your website.

Most analytics software (Google analytics for example) will differentiate the amount of unique visitors from the amount of repeating visitors. And you always want to be aware of the difference between the two. The number of unique visitors is a good way to help a company determine how broad their audience is and is also a good measurement of a website's popularity.

Why It's Important

When managing your company website, you always want to know how many actual visitors you have received. When analyzing website traffic, you may receive 500 visits in a month. You will need to know how many unique visitors actually came to your website. You wouldn't want to count 10 visits from one person as 10 unique visits from 10 different people because it will be deceptive when analyzing your website traffic. It can also give you a false impression as to how an online marketing campaign is performing.

By analyzing the amount of unique visitors that your website receives, this helps to determine whether or not a search engine optimization or pay per click campaign is working. It will show whether or not it is driving in enough new visitors per day/week/month.
