Website design is the process of planning and creating the look and feel (design) of a website. Websites can contain text, images, videos, animation and other interactive features which a professional website designer can use to his or her benefit. Website design also involves the layout of text, images, etc. The goal is to create a clean, professional feel to a website, especially if the website is for a company.

Several markup languages can be used during the website design process. The most common ones are HTML, CSS, Javascript (for dynamic interactivity) and XHTML (which is part of the HTML family). CSS is used in order to give a website designer more control over website styling and HTML is used to the markup/display of a webpage.

Browsers, such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome will read the website design markup and style sheets and display the design in the browser. Each browser has its own display quirks so a website design will need to be able to adapt to all major browsers.

Why It's Important

The website design is important simply because it is how the website will look. If a company website is designed poorly, it could very well ruin the credibility of the company. The company will not appear to be professional at all. A website must also be designed in such a way that it is easy to navigate and find important pages. Proper design of a website can be the difference between a visitor choosing to use your company's services or the services of your competitor.
