XML is a set of rules for encoding documents and gives information about web pages. XML uses tags in web documents, similar to HTML tags, but XML has no bearing on the format or style of a website. It is merely information.

XML based formats have become the default document encoding format for mainstream software such as Microsoft office. RSS Feeds are also based in the XML format.

Why It's Important

XML is used for sitemaps, which are important for any search engine optimization campaign. By submitting an XML sitemap to the search engines, it helps when indexing your website.
