The Local SEO Checklist You Need to Follow for Clients

April 18, 2025by Potenture

Key Takeaways

  • Local SEO is more than just optimizing Google Business Profiles, clients assume you’re doing it all.

  • Missing technical elements like NAP consistency or location schema can hurt rankings.

  • A good white label partner makes sure no piece gets missed, so agencies can stay focused on client relationships and sales.

Why This Checklist Matters

Here’s the thing: when you manage a client’s local SEO, they usually assume everything’s covered. They don’t know (or care) about citations, schema, or business directory profiles, but they will absolutely notice when the phone isn’t ringing.

That’s where this checklist comes in. Whether you’re handling fulfillment yourself or outsourcing to a white label partner, these are the local SEO essentials you need to have locked down.

On-Site Essentials

Let’s start with what lives on the site itself. Google expects specific signals that help it connect a business with a location.

  • Dedicated location landing pages (especially for multi-location businesses)

  • City and state in page titles and meta descriptions

  • Embedded Google Maps on contact pages

  • Clear NAP (Name, Address, Phone number) on every page, ideally in the footer

  • Local business schema markup to help Google understand your location and services

  • Fast mobile load times (this affects both SEO and conversions)

  • Proper internal linking to location and service pages

If a plumber in Dallas doesn’t mention Dallas on their homepage, don’t expect them to rank for anything local.

Google Business Profile (GBP) Optimization

This one’s obvious, but only when it’s done right. It’s shocking how many client GBPs are either incomplete or outdated.

Here’s what you need to make sure is handled:

  • Business categories are accurate and specific

  • Service areas are set correctly (especially for service businesses)

  • Photos are up to date and high-quality

  • Business hours are correct and updated for holidays

  • Posts are being published regularly

  • Questions and answers are being monitored and managed

  • Reviews are being responded to

  • The business description actually includes local keywords

A white label team will often monitor this weekly. Most agencies can’t, especially if they’re managing multiple clients.

Off-Site Signals

This is the area that gets ignored the most and it’s also where you can blow clients away by showing them what’s happening behind the scenes.

Here’s what to cover:

  • NAP consistency across all major directories (Yelp, BBB, Apple Maps, etc.)

  • Citations are being built, especially niche directories

  • Backlinks from locally relevant sources (news, blogs, chambers of commerce)

  • Social media signals (if tied to location pages, this matters)

  • Local press or media mentions (bonus points if they include the city name)

Even just cleaning up NAP inconsistencies can move the needle. A lot of agencies skip this step because it’s tedious. A good white label partner won’t.

Technical SEO for Local

You’d be surprised how many local clients’ sites are held back by simple technical issues.

Here’s what should be audited and fixed regularly:

  • Duplicate content across location pages

  • Canonical tags on city/service pages

  • Broken internal links or redirects

  • Location pages not being indexed (check Google Search Console)

  • Slow page load speeds on mobile

  • Missing or misconfigured schema

  • Site isn’t using HTTPS (yep, still a thing in 2025)

These are the little things that cause clients to quietly drift toward competitors.

Bonus: Tracking What Matters

Don’t just do the work, show the results.

You should be tracking:

  • Calls from GBP

  • Direction requests

  • Form submissions

  • Chat conversions (if enabled)

  • Rankings for local terms in their immediate area

  • GBP Insights and GSC data for branded queries

This is where white label dashboards can save your life. They give your client a clean view without overwhelming them  and keep you from scrambling to build reports every month.

Most agencies think of local SEO as just “doing some GBP stuff and writing city pages.” But clients expect a lot more  whether they say it or not.

This checklist gives you a way to cover all the right bases. And if you don’t have time to handle all of it, a good white label partner already has this baked into their monthly workflow.

Clients stay happy, results keep growing, and no one’s left wondering what’s being done behind the scenes.
