A Simple Breakdown of SEO, AEO and GEO for Modern Brands

August 16, 2026by jferrughelli

Marketing teams keep hearing three acronyms thrown around as though they are separate budget lines competing for the same dollars. SEO, AEO, and GEO are not three different strategies fighting for priority. They are layers of the same search visibility strategy, each one building on the last. Understanding how they connect, rather than treating them as a progression where one replaces another, is what separates brands that show up everywhere buyers are searching from brands that quietly lose ground.

Here is what this article covers:

  • What SEO, AEO, and GEO each actually mean, without the jargon
  • Where the three overlap and where they genuinely differ
  • Why traditional SEO is still the foundation everything else is built on
  • A practical example showing how one buyer question touches all three layers
  • A simple framework for deciding where to invest first

SEO: Getting Found

SEO is the discipline most marketing leaders already know, and it remains the foundation everything else sits on. The objective is straightforward: rank prominently in organic results and capture qualified searches before a competitor does. Core techniques have not changed much in principle, even if execution has:

  • Keyword and intent research
  • Technical SEO, crawlability, and indexation
  • Content quality and topical authority
  • Backlinks and internal linking

Picture a healthcare technology company trying to rank for “patient engagement software.” Traditional SEO means building the strongest possible page for that term and earning authority over time, measured through rankings, impressions, clicks, and conversions. None of that goes away because AI search exists. AI systems still rely heavily on crawlable, well-structured, authoritative content when deciding what to surface.

AEO: Becoming the Answer

Answer engine optimization shifts the question from can Google find this page to can Google immediately understand and extract the answer from this page. That is a meaningfully different bar to clear.

AEO techniques focus on structure and clarity:

  • Answer-first content instead of long preambles
  • Question-based headings and clear definitions
  • Short paragraphs, bullets, and FAQ sections
  • Evidence placed close to the claims it supports
  • Relevant structured data and schema markup

Using the same healthcare example, instead of a long introduction before explaining what a patient engagement platform does, the page would open with the question directly, followed by a concise definition, then capabilities, use cases, and limitations. This is the format AI tools can lift and quote cleanly. Success shows up as featured snippet visibility, People Also Ask appearances, AI Overview citations, and stronger engagement on long-tail question content.

GEO: Becoming Part of the AI Answer

Generative engine optimization is less familiar territory for most marketing teams, because it is not about ranking a page at all. It is about whether generative systems understand, mention, cite, and recommend your brand across environments like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Copilot. AI Overviews alone now appear on roughly 48 percent of tracked Google searches as of early 2026, far from a niche consideration for most categories.

The question GEO answers is different from SEO or AEO. When an AI system responds to a buyer’s question about your category, does your brand become part of that answer? Getting there requires:

  • Strong entity clarity around who you are and what you do
  • Category definition and best-for content matched to buyer situations
  • Comparison, alternatives, and integration truth pages
  • Third-party corroboration, reviews, and community presence
  • Consistent brand information across the web
  • Ongoing citation and mention monitoring

Metrics look different too. Instead of rankings, GEO success is measured through mention rate, citation rate, AI share of voice, and branded search lift over time.

How the Three Layers Work Together

Take an enterprise CRM company. A prospect might search “enterprise CRM software,” a straightforward SEO query where the goal is ranking a strong category page. That same prospect might later ask what features an enterprise CRM should have, an AEO-style question where the goal is being the clearest source answering it. Eventually they might prompt an AI tool with something far more specific, like the best enterprise CRMs for a 1,000-person sales team needing Salesforce integrations and single sign-on. That is a GEO prompt, and the goal is being included in the shortlist and described accurately.

The same website supports all three outcomes, but different content and authority signals influence each layer. A SaaS company selling attribution software needs a category hub, integration pages, comparison pages, and clear pricing information to compete across all three. A cybersecurity company selling identity access management needs the same structure built around SCIM and SSO documentation and procurement content.

The Misconception to Avoid

The biggest mistake marketing teams make is framing this as a progression, SEO leading to AEO leading to GEO, where each stage replaces the last. That model breaks down fast. A company with poor technical SEO or unclear site architecture will struggle with GEO no matter how much energy it puts into AI-specific tactics. The layers are additive, not sequential: SEO foundation, plus AEO structure, plus GEO visibility, working as one system.

Where to Invest First

For most organizations, the practical starting point looks like this:

  • Audit current pages by which layer they support: SEO, AEO, GEO, or a combination
  • Fix foundational SEO gaps first, since nothing else performs well without that base
  • Restructure key pages to answer questions directly for AEO gains
  • Build the comparison and best-for assets that give AI systems a reason to cite the brand

Potenture’s Modern Search Visibility Audit was built around exactly this kind of assessment. It evaluates traditional SEO performance, answer-readiness, and LLM visibility together, then builds a prioritized roadmap showing where SEO fundamentals need strengthening, which pages should be restructured for answers, and where GEO investments are most likely to increase brand mentions and citations. For marketing leaders trying to figure out where their organization stands across all three layers, that combined view is far more useful than looking at any one in isolation.

SEO, AEO, and GEO are not separate line items to argue over in a planning meeting. They are one visibility strategy viewed through three lenses, and brands that treat them that way are the ones showing up consistently, wherever their buyers are searching.
